Why I Do What I Do
Mental Health is being discussed openly more than ever before. We've made great strides in bringing awareness, working to break the stigma, and providing effective treatment. However, there is much work left to be done.
Parenting a child with a mental illness has been one of the hardest, most painful, most discouraging, and incredibly rewarding things I've ever done. There are so many obstacles to overcome when seeking support and care for chronic mental illnesses. We have worked our way through the mental health care system, the educational system, and fought to get proper diagnoses and care. The overwhelming amount of research, time, and energy it has taken me to get us to a place of stability is staggering.
I firmly believe 'you don't know what you don't know'. Parenting a chronically ill child launches the entire family into a foreign lifestyle without the benefit of a translator or guide.
My passion is to use the firsthand knowledge I've gained to prevent other families from having to muddle their way through the systems; and instead, become empowered, focused, and productive. I want to help bring awareness and understanding to educators, clinicians, and those who serve children and youth; giving them insight and tools to maximize their roles in the lives of kids struggling with mental illness.
I want to educate the community about the realities of mental illness in such a way that builds compassion, connection, and support.
Addressing mental needs with the same attention and fervor as we address physical illnesses can literally change the quality and course of a life, which then changes families, and ultimately translates into a changed world.
